Xoftspy SE Review    By Tom Armstrong

Xoftspy is a poor spyware tool. There's so many things wrong with it that it's hard to believe anyone is buying and using it. To make matters worse, it's more expensive than other tools.

What does this software do? Xoftspy SE scans your computer, looking for any spyware infecting it. After performing a scan, you'll be shown a list of spyware threats it located on your PC. You can then click a button to remove these problems.
Buying notes The credit card payments for this product are handled by a company called Clickbank. They are a huge company with a track record spanning many years and offer excellent customer support. I've bought many products through this company and never had any problems.
First impressions Compared to some of the other tools I've tested in the anti spyware market, Xoftspy looks a little dated. Having said that, the installation was painless, as was getting and installing the latest updates. Another plus is that you can resize the window to whichever size fits your monitor best.
Real time protection Bizarrely, Xoftspy doesn't include any realtime protection against spyware. You're just getting a basic spyware scanning and removal tool. This is a real drawback to this program. When you click 'close', it doesn't move down to the system tray and watch for threats. Xoftspy just closes down completely until the next time you run it.
Product updates Frequency: Although I couldn't get an answer from support as to how often updates to the definitions files were, I was able to receive updates to the program at least once a week.
Customer Support Customer support is available via email. Although I was unable to get a reply to the questions I had.
What I liked Easy to start a scan and check for spyware

Xoftspy runs quickly and does a decent job of detecting existing spyware on your computer.
What I didn't like No support for Vista

Vista users are left out in the dark here as this is one of the few anti-spyware tools that does not allow you to use Vista.

Weird first screen

The first thing that popped up was a screen telling me that my browser homepage may have been hijacked and that I had to select one of the options to correct it. This was a weird step because, like many other people, I always set my browser homepage to a page of my choice. This was an odd introduction to the tool.

No indication of the length of the scan

When you run a scan, you have no idea of where the software is up to or how long the whole thing will take. There's just a rather boring screen that lists how many objects have been scanned. Is a percentage complete bar too much to ask for?

Poor reporting

The screen you get to after the scan is even less helpful than the one during it. There's no easy-to-read threat level indicator. And the information you get about each threat within the tool is very basic. There is a link you can click on to get more information however. But it's just something that should be in the software.
Strengths
  • Easy to use
  • Window is resizable
  • Software runs efficiently
Weaknesses
  • Dated looking interface
  • No realtime protection
  • Poor customer support
  • No Vista support
  • Unnecessary & confusing browser options
  • No indication of scan length
  • Poor reporting of threat and it's severity
The verdict Xoftspy is a poor bit of software that's more expensive than it's competitors. You could forgive the price tag if it really delivered on it's promises but there's little here that's worth the installation. There's no resident protection, the scan is very basic, the results window is very limited. I think ParetoLogic have lost interest in this tool and I would advise anyone to give it a wide berth.
